Domestic violence (D.V.) is on the rise in Iraq due to the pandemic. However, D.V. has always been a prevalent problem in Iraqi households. Women making up a large part of the survivors. A significant portion of cases goes unreported due to the fact that a lot of families traditionally justify this abuse. Even if resources exist, many women are too afraid to seek out help. This is a fundamental issue of Iraqi culture and tradition and would take generations to reprimand. Nevertheless, these are some of the potential resources survivors can turn to.

توندوتیژی خیزانی لە بەرزبونەوە دایە لە عێڕاق بەهۆی ئەو پەتایە ١. هەرچۆنێک بێت توندوتیژی خیزانی یەکێک بووە لە کێشەکانی ناو ماڵەکان لە عێراق. ئافرەت بەشێکی گەورە لە قوربانیانی توندوتیژی خیزانی پێک دەهێنن. بەشێکی زۆر لە کەیسەکان باس ناکرێن چونکە بەپێ نەریتی ئێرە خێزانەکان پاساو دەهێنەوە بۆ ئەو دەستدرێژیە. تەنانەت ئەگەر سەرچاوەکان هەشبن زۆرێک لە ئافرەتان دەترسن لە داواکردنی یارمەتی. ئەوە کێشەیەکی بنچینیەییە لە کەلتور و داب و نەرتی خەڵکی عێڕاقی هەروەها چەند نەوەیەک دەوێت تا چاک بکرێت. هەرچۆنێک بێت ئەوە چەند سەرچاوەیەکن کە قوربانیان دەتوانن بەکاری بهێنن:

نامیلکە و ناوەڕۆکەکان دەتوانێت یارمەتی ئەو کەسانە بدات کە ڕووبەروی توندوتیژی بونەتەوە؛٤٩٧.لەگەڵ ئەو زانیاری و نامانەی دەربارەی هەڵمەتەکە،جۆرەکانی توندوتیژی،هەروەها کێ توندوتیژی خێزانی ئەنجام دەدا.

Regrettably, there are not many reliable resources survivors of D.V can turn to. In article 41 (1) of the Iraqi Penal Code, it is considered a legal right for husbands to punish their wives. Article 398 gives legal immunity to perpetrators of rape who marry the victim. There is a great deal of legislation, reform, education, and awareness needed to help ensure women’s rights in Iraq. It goes far deeper than just providing resources, as helpful as they are. There needs to be a serious change in how Iraqi society legally and culturally views domestic and gender-based violence.

بەداخەوە، لە عێراق سەرچاوەی باوەرپێکراو نیە لەسەر بابەتی توندوتیژی خێزانی.لە وتاری ٤١ (١)ی پانێڵی کۆدی عێراق،بە وردی لێی کۆڵراوەتەوە کە مافی یاساییە بۆ پیاو سزای هاوسەرەکەی بدات.وتاری ٣٩٨ ئەوەمان پێ دەڵێت کە مافی بەرگری هەیە ئەو کەسەی ڕووبەروی توندوتیژی دەبێتەوە لەلایەن هاوسەرەکانیان٢. ئەوە گرێبەستێکی زۆر نایابە بۆ یاسادانان ،چاکسازی،پەروەردە،هەروەها بڵاوکردنەوەی ئاگاداری پێوەستە بۆ سەپاندنی مافەکانی ئافرەت لە عێراق.وا پێویستە کە کۆمەڵگای عێراقی تێڕوانینی خۆی بگۆرێت لەلایەنی یاسایی و کولتوری دەربارەی توندوتیژی خێزانی و توندوتیژی لەسەر بنەمای ڕەگەزی.

Domestic violence occurs when one person tries to dominate and control another person in a family-like or domestic relationship, it involves an abuse of power. D.V. has significantly affected more women than men. In Iraq, we do not have sufficient resources, systems, and services survivors can turn to. D.V. is a cultural and societal issue in Iraq. A lot of survivors do not realize what they are going through is abuse due to it being so normalized. In many cases, even Iraqi law justifies husbands abusing their wives as a legal right.
