Who We Are

Hi, welcome to our website! We are a group of eight high school students who are working across borders. Four of us are from the United States and four of us are from Iraq. We are all enrolled in the United Planet's Summer Program: American-Iraqi Public Health Teams Addressing COVID-19, and have worked together for the past seven weeks on our Capstone Project. Our team chose to research Domestic Violence during COVID-19.

Domestic violence (D.V.) is a public health issue that affects people globally across the spectrum, and it has been going on long before the pandemic started. It has not been talked about enough in the past, but even more so now that we are in the middle of a pandemic. To bring attention to this topic, all of us wanted to better understand what domestic violence is, and how it correlates to COVID-19.  We do not want to be a part of the silence, and rather want to use what we learned and our voices to better educate others on ways they too can emphasize and help support those who are struggling.

We hope our website can help you navigate all the information you need, and most importantly that you can take something meaningful away from this website.

From this whole project, I learned how there are so many forgotten or hidden issues that we forget happens to so many people almost every day. learning about domestic violence was definitely something that took a lot of preparation to handle because its not an easy topic which is why so many people try to elude from discussing it. it truly is a pandemic within a pandemic in terms of domestic violence during COVID-19. it made me realize that we can’t drop everything because we have a pandemic on hand, rather we should be using all our resources to help support all of the issues that have been occurring or just risen. the pandemic shouldn’t take people’s attention away from this and other important issues but it should highlight and expose the many issues the world faces.

This capstone project really pushed me to stare the grim truths of Domestic Violence in the face. Before researching about Domestic Violence, I was completely unaware about exactly what it was, what it entailed, and how to respond to and help survivors, let alone how it was exacerbated by COVID-19. I feel that the capstone project not only pushed me to understand Domestic Violence and survivors, but also helped me learn to work in a team.  Whether it be learning to communicate effectively, work cooperatively, or consider so many viewpoints, the project was an incredibly enriching experience. I had an amazing time working in a team across borders to research this issue.
